Are you fed up with the limitations of your current website? Do you want to develop a project online, but can’t find the functionality you need?

Most of the well-publicised website building solutions are hosted – the online equivalent of fast food – but how realistic is it to take control and go beyond the limits of hosted solutions, particularly if you’re not a coder?

This workshop will provide a beginner’s guide to managing your own hosting, including ways of installing free, open source, software (such as the self-hosted version of WordPress and Drupal), and a foundation for continuing to experiment with confidence.

It will help if you have an existing project in mind, and an idea of what you want to achieve. No coding knowledge is required, but some experience of website building will be useful. Bring your own laptop (essential) and find out just how far it’s possible to go.

Alison Bancroft

Alison is a project consultant. Her experience includes designing online information and project management systems, and building and managing multi-user websites. However, her background is not in tech. She was driven to learn by her fascination with online technologies and the ways in which they can open new possibilities for collaboration, innovation and action. She is a strong believer in the power of the open-source community and what can be achieved through knowledge sharing.
